you can vote by mail if you

Register to vote by October 19th.

Request an absentee ballot by October 27th if you apply by mail, or October 29th if you apply in person.

Have a specific reason for needing to vote by mail: see all the reasons acceptable for Alabama here and see if any apply to you.

If you need information about voting with a disability click here.

If you have a criminal conviction, click here to check your eligibility.

Military and Overseas Voters

Active duty military, military family member, or living overseas? You have additional voting options! Visit FVAP.GOV for details specific to your situation.

Deadlines

Make sure you're registered by October 19.

Request your Absentee Ballot by October 27th if you apply by mail, or October 29th if you apply in person. We recommend earlier though - apply at least two weeks before Election Day if you can.

Exceptions for emergencies: if you have a death in your family, are scheduled to work last-minute on Election Day, need emergency medical treatment, or someone you care for needs emergency medical treatment within 5 days of the election, you can apply for the Emergency Absentee Voting process until 5pm the day before Election Day. More info here — contact your Absentee Election Manager ASAP if you need this option.

Hand-deliver your Absentee Ballot to your local Absentee Election Manager in person by 5pm on November 2nd (the day BEFORE Election Day).

If you mail in your ballot, we recommend you do so by October 26th because Alabama requires that they receive it by NOON on Election Day. (Theoretically a piece of mail can get delivered from one part of the state to another in a week...maybe? Hopefully? VOTE EARLY!!)

If you still have your Absentee Ballot on Election Day, you can take it to your polling place and surrender it, but then you'll have to wait in line to vote provisionally and really it's not worth it so just get that ballot in ASAP so you don't forget!

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Include a photocopy of your driver's license or the last 4 digits of your SSN in the designated area.

Put your ballot inside the blank "secrecy" envelope. Then put that cute little package you created into the envelope that says "affidavit” on it.

Sign the envelope that says "affidavit" and have TWO friends sign it too, as witnesses. They have to be grownups! (18 years old+)

OR If you're more of a loner type, you can sign it in front of a notary (a professionally licensed witness that you pay for some reason). In-person only — remote or electronic notarization is not allowed!

Put allll of that in the third envelope (BTW make sure all the envelopes are sealed).

Put a stamp on it!

You cannot have anyone drop off your ballot for you, unless you're doing emergency absentee voting (see above) — everyone has to deliver their own ballot or have the mail carrier do it.
