Deadlines

Register to vote by October 13th in person, by mail or online, or by October 27th through the BMV.

Your request for an absentee ballot must be RECEIVED by 5pm on October 29th — but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day.

Exceptions for emergencies: under Maine law, if you have last-minute illness, disability, or need to travel or work that will prevent you from voting in person on Election Day, you can request an absentee ballot after the normal deadline. Contact your local clerk or registrar for more details.

Ballots must be RECEIVED by 8pm on Election Day. So if you’re putting it in the mail, you should really do so by October 27th to be safe. Or you can take it to a drop off location.

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Put your completed ballot in the return envelope provided.

Seal it up!

Sign the return envelope where indicated on the outer flap.

If you’re going to mail it, put a stamp on it! And be sure to put it in the mail by October 27th.

Or if you’re dropping it off with your municipal clerk, no postage is necessary.

If you need someone to drop your ballot off for you, it needs to be an immediate family member or someone that you designated back when you made the request for an absentee ballot.
