Deadlines
Register to vote by mail or online by October 19th. Michigan has same-day registration if you miss this deadline, but you’ll need to do it in person.
Your request for an absentee ballot must be RECEIVED by 5pm on October 30th, but earlier is better — Michigan recommends applying at least 2 weeks before Election Day. (Click here to request an accessible ballot for voters with print disabilities).
Exceptions for emergencies: if you become disabled due to an injury or illness or have a death in the family, you can apply for an Emergency Absent Voter Ballot up until 4pm on Election Day. Contact your local clerk ASAP if you need to use this option, they’ll give you all the details.
Ballots must be RECEIVED by 8pm on Election Day — so you should put it in the mail by October 27th.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Put your completed ballot in the secrecy sleeve (that has the instructions on it). The number stub should stick out. DO NOT tear it off. If it becomes detached, then include it with the envelope.
Put the sleeve with the ballot in the return envelope provided and seal it all up.
Sign and date the return envelope where indicated. Your signature should match the one you registered with.
If you’re going to mail it, put a stamp on it. Then be sure to put it in the mail as far in advance of Election Day as you possibly can! We recommend mailing by October 27th.
Or if you’re dropping it off with your local election office or a dropbox, drop it by 8pm on Election Day at the latest! Only an immediate family member or household member can return your ballot for you.
DO NOT take your ballot to your polling place on Election Day, unless you want to wait in line to insert it directly into a machine.
