Deadlines

You must be registered to vote by October 7th.

Your application for an absentee ballot must be RECEIVED by 5pm on October 21st.

Ballots must be received by 7pm on Election Day — so you should put it in the mail by October 27th to be sure it arrives in time to be counted.

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Include the last 4 digits of your SSN in the designated area. If you registered by mail and haven’t voted in person in Missouri before, you’ll also need to include a photocopy of an unexpired Missouri DL/ID, an unexpired military or veteran’s ID, an unexpired US passport, or another photo ID issued by the US or Missouri (either unexpired, or expired sometime after November 5, 2024). If you are active military, voting from overseas, permanently disabled, or are a caregiver for someone who is permanently disabled, you don’t need to meet this ID requirement.

Put it in the affidavit envelope provided and seal it.

You may need to sign your affidavit envelope in front of a notary, depending on which “excuse” you marked when you requested your ballot. Here is a reminder of the allowable “excuses” and which ones need notarization.

Put your signed and sealed affidavit envelope that contains your ballot into the return envelope they provided and seal that too.

You don’t need to put a stamp on it — MO pays your postage for you!

Pop it in the mail by October 27th to ensure it has time to arrive by the deadline.

Whether you’re allowed to drop off your absentee-by-mail ballot at your Election Day polling place or local election office varies by county — call your local office to ask about your options, especially if you’re not sure whether the mail will allow enough time.
