Deadlines
You must be registered to vote by October 5th. Montana has late registration if you miss this deadline, but you’ll need to vote in person.
Your application for an absentee ballot must be received by November 2nd at noon — but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day.
Exceptions for medical emergencies: if you have a health-related emergency after 5pm the Friday before the election, you can apply for an Emergency Absentee Ballot, including on Election Day. Contact your local elections office directly if you need to use this option. Just remember the voted ballot still needs to be received by the deadline!
Ballots must be received by Election Day at 8pm — so you should put it in the mail by October 27th to be sure it arrives in time to be counted.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Put your ballot in the secrecy envelope provided.
Put that little bundle you just made into the return envelope provided.
Sign, date, and write your birth year on the return envelope where indicated. Your signature should match your voter registration.
Drop it at a designated ballot collection site (each county sets their own locations — click on ‘County Election Offices’ and contact your local office to find yours) by 8pm on Election Day. You can have someone drop off your ballot for you if you need.
If you’re going to mail it, pop it in the mailbox by October 27th. Most counties are paying your postage for you, but some ask you to put a stamp on it yourself. Check your return envelope and put a stamp on it if needed.
