Deadlines

You must be registered to vote by your municipality’s deadline. In New Hampshire, voter registration is handled by local clerks. Your last opportunity to register is at a Supervisors of the Checklist meeting — each community holds one 6-13 days before every election, but the exact date varies. You have to register in person unless you’re not able to for a specific reason. So don’t leave this to the last minute! Reach out to your local clerk to find out your deadline and make a plan. If you miss it, you’ll have to register and vote in person on Election Day.

Your application for an absentee ballot must be received by noon on November 2nd — but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day. (Click here for an application for an accessible electronic ballot for folks with disabilities.)

Ballots must be RECEIVED by 5pm on Election Day if you mail it, or 5pm the day BEFORE Election Day if you’re dropping it off at your town or city clerk’s office.

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Put your ballot inside the affidavit envelope they sent you. Seal it up.

Sign the affidavit envelope where indicated.

Put that little bundle you just created into the return envelope they provided. Seal that up too.

Put a stamp on it!

Write your return address on the upper left-hand corner of the return envelope.

Pop it in the mail by October 27th.

Or you can take it to your county clerk directly.

Or you can drop it off at your polling place on Election Day. If you need someone to drop it off for you, that person needs to be a family member, a caregiver, or a nursing home facility staff person (unless you have a disability — voters with disabilities can choose any adult to be their delivery agent, as long as they’re only delivering ballots for four voters). They will need to sign the delivery affidavit included with your ballot materials, and have to sign a form and present ID to the clerk when they drop it off.
