Deadlines

You must be registered to vote by October 13th.

Your request for a vote by mail ballot must be RECEIVED by October 27th if you apply by mail, or by 3pm on November 2nd if you apply in person. But earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day if you can.

Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by November 9th — so best to pop it in the mail by October 27th to make sure it arrives on time. (If your ballot doesn’t get a postmark, it’ll still be accepted as long as it arrives by November 5th — but don’t push it!)

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Put your ballot in the inner certificate envelope and seal it. There is a flap on there — keep it attached!

Sign the flap where indicated. Your signature should match your voter registration.

Put that in the return envelope and seal that too.

Take it to a secure dropbox near you or your county elections office by 8pm on Election Day. Someone can drop off your ballot for you as long as they aren’t delivering more than three ballots. That person needs to fill out the “bearer portion” of the return envelope in front of you.

Or you can drop it in the mail, ideally before October 27th — it should be postmarked by Election Day.

No need to put a stamp on it — NJ pays your postage!

You CANNOT return it to your polling place or early voting location.
