Deadlines
You must be registered to vote by October 6th.
Your request for an absentee ballot must be received by October 20th at 5pm.
Exceptions for medical emergencies: if you have a medical emergency after the normal absentee ballot deadline, you can request an Emergency Provisional Ballot. If accepted, you can authorize a representative to bring you the ballot, then deliver it back. Your healthcare provider will need to sign the application. Call your County Clerk’s office directly if you need to use this option — they’ll help you out.
Ballots must be received by 7pm on Election Day, so get them in the mail by October 27th.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Put your ballot in the secrecy envelope and seal it.
Put that little bundle in the return envelope provided. Seal it up!
Sign the return envelope where indicated.
No need to put a stamp on it — New Mexico pays your postage on the return envelope. How enchanting!
Don’t worry about the spot that asks for an AV Register Number — leave it blank.
Take it to a secure dropbox near you. If you need someone to drop it off for you, it needs to be a family member. The person who is dropping it off will have to sign a receipt when they are dropping it off.
Or you can pop it in the mail, ideally by October 27th — ballots must be received by 7pm on Election Day!
Or you can drop it off at your polling place on Election Day.
