Deadlines

You must be registered to vote by October 24th. If you’re already registered and need to update your address, you need to do that by October 19th.

Your request for a ballot must be received by October 24th if you apply by mail or online, or by November 2nd if you apply in person.

Heads up that New York has two kinds of voting by mail — Absentee Ballots are for people with specific reasons why they can’t vote in person, and Early Mail ballots are for everyone else who would simply prefer to vote by mail. (We know, this is confusing.) Check out the reasons for going the Absentee route and see if any apply to you. Make sure you apply for the right one!

Exceptions for emergencies: if needed, you can designate a family or household member to apply for an Absentee Ballot in person for you up until the day before the election. Your designated person can bring your ballot to you and deliver it back.

Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by November 10th — but don’t live on the edge like that, get it in early!

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Put your ballot in the security envelope and seal it.

Sign and date the security envelope where indicated. Your signature should match your voter registration.

Put the security envelope in the return envelope and seal that up too.

Drop it at your County Board of Elections Office no later than 9pm on Election Day.

Or you can drop it at an early voting poll site between October 24th and November 1st.

Or you can put it in the mail, ensuring it receives a postmark by Election Day.

If you’re going to mail it, there’s no need for a stamp — New York pays your postage!

Or you can take it to a poll site on Election Day by 9pm.

Someone can return your ballot for you.
