Deadlines
Your request for an absentee ballot must be received by November 2nd — but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day.
Exceptions for emergencies: if you have an emergency on Election Day, you can designate someone to deliver your absentee ballot request, bring your ballot to you and deliver the voted ballot back.
Ballots must be received by the close of polls on Election Day so get them in the mail by October 27th.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Some form of ID is required — you can use your DL/ID# or tribal ID# if you have a tribal ID. There are special circumstances for some voters: if you’re in long-term care, you can use a photocopy of a long-term care certificate; if you’re active military, you can use your military ID; if you’re outside the US, you can use your passport #; if you have a disability, instead of providing an ID you can have any adult friend, relative, or acquaintance of yours sign a form attesting to your identity, as long they’re also a North Dakota resident.
Put your ballot in the secrecy envelope provided.
Then put that in the return envelope provided and seal it all up.
Sign the back of the return envelope where indicated.
Drop it at your county auditor/election official’s office or a ballot collection site in your area by the close of polls on Election Day. You can have someone drop it off for you if needed, but they need to be an immediate family member.
Or you can pop it in the mail, ideally by October 27th — ballots must be received by the close of polls on Election Day.
Put a stamp on it if you’re going to mail it.
DO NOT take your ballot to your polling place on Election Day. If you do, they will destroy it and you will have to vote normally in-person.
