Deadlines

You must be registered to vote by October 5th.

Your request for an absentee ballot must be received by October 27th at 8:30pm — but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day.

Exceptions for medical emergencies: if you or your minor child is hospitalized, you can request an absentee ballot up until 3pm on Election Day. Contact your county’s Board of Elections office if you need to use this option — they’ll give you all the details.

Ballots must be RECEIVED by Election Day! Ohio used to have a grace period but doesn’t anymore, so we recommend popping it in the mail by October 27th.

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Include either the last 4 digits of your SSN or your DL/ID# in the designated area. If you don’t have any of these, include a photocopy of a photo ID or another document that includes your name and address (like a lease or rental agreement, paycheck, government document, etc.).

Put your ballot in the security envelope. Seal it and fill out the information on the envelope.

Sign that envelope where indicated. Your signature should match your registration.

Put that sealed and signed envelope inside the return envelope provided.

If you can, take it to a ballot drop off site in your area, anytime before 7:30pm on Election Day.

If you’re mailing your ballot, put a stamp on it! Depending on your county, it may take one stamp or may take two — read the instructions that come with your ballot, then put it in the mail ASAP, we recommend by October 27th. Ballots must be received by Election Day.

Or you can drop off your ballot at your polling place. If you need someone to drop off your ballot for you, it must be a near relative, unless you have a disability — voters with disabilities can have anyone they choose drop off their ballot.
