Deadlines
Register to vote by October 19th.
Request your ballot by October 27th at 5pm — but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day.
Heads up that Pennsylvania has two kinds of voting by mail — Absentee Ballots are for people with specific reasons why they can’t vote in person, and Mail-in Ballots are for everyone else who would simply prefer to vote by mail. (We know, this is confusing.) Check out the reasons for going the Absentee route and see if any apply to you. Make sure you apply for the right one!
Exceptions for medical emergencies: if you have a last-minute emergency after 5pm the Tuesday before Election Day, like an illness, injury, or need to travel urgently, you can apply for an emergency absentee ballot up until the polls close on Election Day. Use this form or call your county’s Board of Elections office directly — they’ll give you all the details.
Ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day — so if you’re mailing yours, we recommend putting it in the mail by October 27th to make sure it arrives by the deadline.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Include either your Driver’s License/ID number, or the last 4 digits of your SSN in the designated area. If you don’t have either of those, you need to submit a photocopy of an acceptable photo ID instead.
Put your ballot in the yellow envelope marked “Official Election Ballot” provided and SEAL IT. Seriously, close it up good.
Put that sealed secrecy envelope into the return envelope provided and seal that too.
Sign and date the return envelope where indicated. Your signature should match your registration.
Drop your ballot at your local Board of Elections office or another drop-off location by 8pm on Election Day. If the location has a dropbox, you can have someone drop it off for you in that dropbox. But if the ballot has to be turned in to an elections official in your county, then only you can take it in.
If you’re mailing in your ballot, drop it in the mail by October 27th. No need to put a stamp on it — PA covers your postage!
DO NOT take your ballot to your polling place on Election Day.
