Deadlines

Register to vote by October 4th.

Request a mail-in ballot by October 13th at 4pm.

The application lists a few specific reasons for voting by mail, but anyone can request a ballot — if the listed reasons don’t apply to you, just check the box that says “I choose to vote by mail.”

Exceptions for medical emergencies: if you are hospitalized or confined to a nursing home, rehab center, or other facility because of a medical issue after the regular request deadline, you can apply for an Emergency Mail Ballot until 4pm on November 2nd. Contact your local Board of Canvassers ASAP if you need to use this option — they’ll give you all the details.

Ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day — so if you’re mailing yours, we recommend putting it in the mail by October 27th to make sure it arrives by the deadline.

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Heads up that you’ll need to provide either your Rhode Island driver’s license/state ID number or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number on the application.

Insert your ballot into the Voter’s Mail Ballot Certificate (smaller envelope).

Print your name on the certificate.

Sign the certificate. Your signature should match your vote by mail application. If anyone helped you complete your ballot, they need to fill out the Voter Assistant Certification.

Provide a phone number in case election officials need to clarify anything with you.

Place all that in the return envelope provided.

No need to put a stamp on it — Rhode Island covers your postage for you!

Drop it in a dropbox near you before 8pm on Election Day.

Or you can pop it in the mail before October 27th.

Or you can drop it at your polling place on election day.

Someone can return your ballot for you.
