you can vote by mail if you
Are registered to vote by October 5th.
Request an absentee ballot by October 24th.
You have one of the acceptable reasons for voting by mail listed on this page in section 1.
Are not required to vote in person — in Tennessee, if you registered to vote online or by mail, you must vote in person the first time you vote in your county. The only exceptions are for people who are on the permanent absentee voting register (this is for voters who are ill, disabled, or hospitalized — Physician’s Statement required) or enrolled in the Safe at Home program.
If you need an accessible absentee ballot because of a print disability, use this application.

Military and Overseas Voters
Active duty military, military family member, or living overseas? You have additional voting options! Visit FVAP.GOV for details specific to your situation.
Deadlines
Make sure you’re registered to vote by October 5th.
Request for absentee ballots must be received by October 24th. Be sure to follow the directions for your application and include the materials requested on this page in section 2.
Exceptions for medical emergencies: under Tennessee law, if you are hospitalized within 20 days of the election, you can have a ballot delivered to you by an “emergency registrar.” Contact your county’s Election Commission for more details if you need to use this option.
Ballots must be received by close of polls on Election Day — we recommend putting it in the mail by October 27th to make sure it arrives by the deadline.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Put your ballot in the privacy envelope provided and seal it up.
Sign the privacy envelope where indicated.
Then put that signed and sealed envelope in the return envelope provided. Seal that too.
Put a stamp on it!
Drop it in the mail by October 27th so it has time to arrive by Election Day.
Absentee ballots must be mailed back, they cannot be hand-delivered to your election authority or dropped off at your polling pace.
