Deadlines

Technically there’s no registration deadline, but Vermont starts mailing ballots on October 1st — the earlier you register, the earlier you’ll get yours. We suggest registering to vote at least a couple weeks before Election Day. If you wait until less than two weeks out, your ballot might not get to you in time!

If you need your ballot mailed somewhere other than your home, request an absentee ballot and add your preferred mailing address. Try to do this in September if you know you’ll need it — ballots can’t be forwarded once they’re mailed, so if it goes to the wrong place you’ll need to get a new one sent.

If you’re sick or have a disability, you can have a ballot brought to your home on Election Day. If you need this service, make the request by 5pm the day before Election Day (but earlier is better if you can).

If you’re mailing your ballot, it must be received by 7pm on Election Day, so we recommend putting it in the mail by October 27th to make sure it arrives by the deadline.

If you’re dropping it off in person, take it to your town clerk’s office by closing time the day BEFORE Election Day, or to your polling place on Election Day (you have till 7pm!)

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Put your ballot in the certificate envelope and sign where indicated. Your signature should match your registration.

Put the signed certificate envelope inside the return envelope and seal everything up.

Take your ballot to your town clerk (find yours here) by closing time the day before Election Day.

Or if you’re mailing your ballot, put it in the mail no later than October 27th. No need to put a stamp on it — Vermont pays your postage for you!

Or you can drop it off at your polling place on election day.
