Exceptions for emergencies: if you have a last-minute emergency such as a hospitalization (yours or an immediate family member’s), a death in the family, or an urgent obligation related to your business/job, you can apply for Emergency Absentee Voting up until 2pm the day before Election Day. More details here. Your general registrar’s office can also walk you through the process.
Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by noon on November 6th — so we recommend getting yours in the mail by October 27th. If you’re dropping off, get it to your general registrar’s office by 7pm on Election Day.
FYI: Changes at the Post Office
This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!
Instructions
Include your birth year and the last 4 digits of your SSN in the designated area; you can include the whole # if you want but only the last 4 digits are required.
If it’s your first time voting in Virginia and you registered by mail, you might need to include a photocopy of some form of ID with your ballot. If that’s you, you’ll get a notice and instructions with your ballot package. See more details here.
Put your ballot in the ballot envelope and seal it. Write your name and address where indicated.
Sign and date where indicated. Your signature should match your voter registration.
Put your ballot envelope in the return envelope provided and seal it up.
No need to put a stamp on it — Virginia pays your postage!
Drop your ballot off at a collection site near you by 7pm on Election Day. Details on nearby collection sites will be included with your ballot instructions. Only you can return your ballot, no one can drop it off for you.
If you’re mailing your ballot, drop it in the mail by October 27th.
Or you can drop it at your polling place on Election Day.
