Deadlines

Register to vote by October 13th.

Your request for an absentee ballot must be received by October 28th (but earlier is better! We recommend applying at least two weeks before Election Day if you can).

Exceptions for medical emergencies: if you have a medical emergency within a week of the election, you may be able to get an emergency absentee ballot. Exact rules vary by county — call your county clerk’s office directly to learn more.

If you’re mailing your ballot, it has to be postmarked by Election Day and received by November 8th, so we recommend putting it in the mail by October 27th. Ballots without postmarks will be counted if they’re received by the day after Election Day, but don’t risk it!

If you want to hand-deliver it, you need to do so by November 2nd, the day BEFORE Election Day.

FYI: Changes at the Post Office

This is important: USPS recently changed its policies and won’t always postmark mail the same day it’s picked up from a mailbox — or even the day after. To guarantee a same-day postmark, you’ll need to go to a post office and ask for a manual postmark. All the more reason to mail things early!

Instructions

Do not remove the stub from your ballot! Keep Lil’ Stubby on there!

Fold your ballot and place it in the envelope marked No. 1.

Seal envelope No. 1!

Place the sealed envelope No. 1 inside the envelope marked No. 2 and seal envelope No. 2.

Complete and sign envelope No. 2, titled “Voter, complete this form”. Your signature should match your voter registration.

If it’s your first time voting in West Virginia, you’ll need to include a copy of an acceptable ID with your ballot.

If you hand-deliver your ballot to your county clerk’s office, you must return it by November 2nd when they close for the day.

You can have someone drop your ballot off for you as long as they don’t drop off more than 2 ballots.

If you’re mailing your ballot, no need to put a stamp on it — West Virginia pays your postage for you! Be sure to pop your ballot in the mail by October 27th.
